My Favorite MadTV Characters

Back to Blog

MadTV was one such comedy sketch show which is very close to my heart. While shows like SNL were more popular, MadTV gave a different flavor-bold, weird and totally unpredictable. The best part of this show was its characters-which were so annoying and funny that at times along with laughter one would get angry too! This post is about those my favorite characters, who gave me the real enjoyment of comedy.

Why MadTV Was Special

MadTV was loosely based on Mad Magazine, and its vibe was a little more edgy and raw. The best thing about this show was its inclusive cast—Black, Asian, and women comedians got equal spotlight, which was rare at that time. Talented people like Keegan-Michael Key, Jordan Peele, Debra Wilson, Nicole Sullivan emerged from here. These people were not only funny, they were also fearless—there was no limit to how funny you could be.

Top Favorite Characters

The Vancome Lady (Nicole Sullivan)
This character was both classy and bitchy. She behaved rudely and sarcasticly with everyone, without any reason. But it was fun when she got retribution for her antics.

Ms. Swann (Alex Borstein)
A little clueless, a little married. This character was famous for her cute accent and weird answers. Sometimes it seemed that she understood everything, but people underestimated her.

Bunifa Jackson (Debra Wilson)
She was loud, over-the-top and full drama. Her whole name was a comedy punch. We see such girls in real life too—funny, overconfident and full-on entertainer.

The UPS Man (Phil Lamarr)
An energetic delivery guy who didn't talk much, but his body language was enough. This character was a master of physical comedy. Fun fact: Phil Lamarr has also given the voice of Samurai Jack and Green Lantern.

Java Man (Pat Kilbane)
A coffee addict who would shake constantly when he was high on caffeine. His hyperactive behavior was laughable. An underrated character, but very funny.

My Favorite MadTV Characters

Leona Campbell (Stephanie Weir)
She looked simple but asked smart questions. Her conversations were a funny analysis of the American lifestyle. Stephanie's another popular character 'Dot' was a cute 8-year-old who liked small things.

Lorraine Swanson (Mo Collins)
She was funny on an annoying level. She would always say something weird and make every situation complicated. Her throat-clearing habit and confused attitude were her trademark.

Stewart (Michael McDonald)
The most famous character! Child-like behavior, awkward body language and hilarious scenes with his mom. Everyone remembers this character. Michael McDonald put everything into this role.

Yvonne Criddle (Daniele Gaither)
Revenge queen! If someone gave her even a small trouble, she would do anything to take revenge. Took parking space? She would send the kids to foster home. Extreme, but hilarious.

MadTV’s Lasting Impact

Even today clips of MadTV go viral on YouTube. Even after the show ended, its actors made a splash in the comedy world. The Key & Peele duo are considered some of the best comedians of today. Alex Borstein appeared in The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, and Debra Wilson earned fame in animation and voice work. MadTV paved the way for new sketch comedy shows.

Personal Reflection

These characters were not just funny, they shaped my comedy taste. After watching them, I felt that being perfect is not necessary to be funny a little weird, a little awkward is also fine. Whenever I feel nostalgic, I watch clips of MadTV, and every time I get a new pleasure.
