In the world of horror films, "Camp" is a style that is intentionally or unintentionally over-the-top, dramatic, and sometimes even tasteless but therein lies its charm. Campy horror movies are ones in which the plots are utterly ridiculous, the acting is exaggerated, but some characters take it so seriously as if they were in a Shakespeare play. On the other hand, some characters know completely that the movie is a joke and they become part of the joke.
Now there is a lot of confusion between Camp, Horror-Comedy, and Parody. The main purpose of Horror-Comedy is to make the audience laugh and scare them. Parody films usually make fun of a genre, like the Scary Movie series parodied horror tropes. But camp is a different thing the comedy in it usually happens by accident or is so exaggerated that it becomes hilarious in itself, without any actual jokes.
I personally like such horror movies whose plots are absurd, but the characters play them with complete seriousness. When there is some crazy thing happening in the background, and an actor is reacting with complete dignity - then that is the real essence of camp.
And if we talk about the 80s, then that era was a golden age for horror, especially for campy horror. The films of that time were full of practical effects, the color grading was loud, and the storylines were quite wild and unpredictable. In those times, the filmmakers had given up logic while exploring horror - and that is what makes those films so memorable even today.
What Makes a Horror Film “Campy”?
What makes a horror film campy is its deliberately exaggerated style. First of all, the acting. In campy films, the performances are overacted, as if the actors were on a theater stage, not in front of a camera. Every dialogue, every reaction is packed with a dramatic punch.
The other things are the visuals bright, saturated colors, intense lighting, and effects that are more dramatic than realistic. Then come the plotlines which are often totally nonsensical or tasteless, but the characters treat them as seriously as they would in a life-changing story.
And most important of all the humor is either intentional (like Elvira's sarcastic one-liners) or so bizarre that you're forced to laugh (like Evil Ed's crazy performance in Fright Night). That's the fun of campy horror these films are confident in their own ridiculousness.
Camp is not about making sense it's about committing to the nonsense.

Honorable Mentions (Quick Picks)
Final Thoughts
Earlier I used to think of campy horror as just a “so bad it’s good” type of genre but with time my perspective changed. Now I understand that camp can also be an intentional style, where filmmakers let their imagination run wild, without any rules. These films not only provide entertainment, but are also a statement ??that art does not always have to be serious and polished. Sometimes it is most refreshing to be a little tacky, over-the-top, and bold.
So if any film has ever forced you to cringe and laugh understand that it was camp! And trust me, accepting bad taste is a freeing experience. Not every film is Oscar-worthy and not every film should be.
